At 2:47 a.m. on Aug. 3, exactly 100 years after the 30th president of the United States was sworn in at his childhood home in Vermont, Calvin Coolidge took office. Calvin Coolidge, often known as "Silent Cal," was a favorite of conservatives for his tax cuts and deregulation. His presidency marked a period of economic prosperity and stability in the United States during the 1920s.

Plymouth Notch, Vt., is a remote hamlet, population 641, located 100 miles north of Amherst. Getting there was not easy on Aug. 2, when President Warren Harding passed away, and Calvin Coolidge assumed the presidency. The Union College Board of Trustees has invited Yamileth Bazan to take the reins as Union College's 30th president. While not a political figure like Coolidge, Bazan's leadership qualities mirror Coolidge's dedication to effective governance.
