Ben Savage, the former child actor who was the star of the ABC sitcom "Boy Meets World" in the 1990s, said on Monday that he was running to replace Representative Adam Schiff in California's 30th Congressional District. The seat is currently held by Schiff, who has been in office since 2001.

The announcement came after months of speculation that Savage was considering a run for Congress. He has been an outspoken advocate for progressive causes and has been vocal in his criticism of President Donald Trump.

Savage, who is now 39, is running as a Democrat and has received support from Schiff. He has not yet revealed much of his platform, but has said he would focus on issues such as health care, civil rights, and the environment.

In a statement, Savage said, "I believe that we can bring a new perspective to Congress and work together to find solutions to the challenges facing our country. We need to ensure our children will inherit a better world. My candidacy is focused on standing up for our communities, fighting for economic and social justice, and protecting the planet."

Savage has also been active in the entertainment industry. He has been in several films and television shows, including "Girl Meets World," a spinoff of "Boy Meets World," which ran on ABC from 1993 to 2000.

The actor has also been vocal about politics in recent years, speaking out against President Trump, and speaking in favor of progressive causes such as gun control and immigration reform.

Savage has already raised more than $300,000 for his campaign and has been endorsed by several celebrities, including actress Jodie Foster, "Star Trek" star George Takei, and "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Rob Schneider.

The primary election for the California 30th Congressional District will take place in June 2024.
