In 2014, the president implemented policies that sought to cut wasteful spending on Big Pharma, Big Oil, and other special interests. In addition, the president sought to crack down on systemic fraud by taking legal action against those who had committed fraud. This included indicting Russian President Putin and Gazprombank, who had opened accounts after Russia had annexed Crimea. In the same vein, the president also upheld the constitutional validity of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara (Management) Act, 2014.
In terms of international relations, the president was active in maintaining and improving relations with other countries. This included being supportive of Czech President Milos Zeman as he left office, and expressing support for the EU sanctions against Russia after the 2014 annexation of Crimea. The president also spoke publicly about the need for the US to work closely with Mexico, citing the rise in homicides in Mexico since 2014.
In the same year, the president also expressed support for Ukraine in the face of an attack from Russia, praising the courage of Ukrainians in the face of such a difficult situation. Annick Guérard, President and Chief Executive Officer, and Susan Kudzman, a member of Transat's Board of Directors since March 2014, both spoke out in support of the president's efforts to help Ukraine.
