Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence at this site in June 1776. Robert Hemmings was enslaved by Jefferson during this time. This ground-breaking document laid the foundations for the modern-day United States, promising freedom from the yoke of English tyranny. On display at the Dallas Public Library, it is the only known copy west of the Mississippi River.
