James Monroe was the fifth President of the United States (1817–1825) and the last President from the Founding Fathers. Born in Virginia in 1758, Monroe had a long and distinguished career in public service before becoming president. Serving as Secretary of State and Secretary of War under President James Madison, Monroe gained valuable experience in foreign affairs and military matters.
The fifth president is best known for the doctrine named for him that helped keep European powers from further meddling in the New World.
