James Monroe was the fifth President of the United States (1817–1825) and the last President from the Founding Fathers. Serving as Secretary of State and Secretary of War under President James Madison, Monroe gained valuable experience in foreign affairs and military matters.

During Monroe's presidency, the United States experienced a period of relative peace and prosperity known as the Era of Good Feelings. The country expanded westward, with the acquisition of Florida from Spain and the admission of several new states to the Union. Monroe's administration also negotiated the Missouri Compromise, which temporarily resolved the issue of slavery in the territories.
