(CNN) — Here is a look at the life of Al Gore, 45th vice president of the United States and environmental activist. Albert Arnold Gore Jr. was born on March 31, 1948, in Washington, D.C. He is the son of Albert Gore Sr., a U.S. Representative and Senator from Tennessee, and Pauline (LaFon) Gore, one of the first women to graduate from Vanderbilt Law School. Gore attended Harvard University, where he received a degree with high honors in government in 1969. In 1971, he enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam. After his military service, Gore worked as a journalist before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976. He served in the House until 1984, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate. Gore ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 but lost to Michael Dukakis. He ran for president again in 2000 and won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote to George W. Bush.

Al Gore has served on the Apple board since 2003, the company said. He's also served as the 45th vice president of the United States and as a climate advocate. Gore is the founder and chairman of The Climate Reality Project, a non-profit organization focused on climate change education and advocacy. He has been a leading voice in the fight against climate change and has worked to raise awareness about the issue through his books, documentaries, and public speaking engagements. In 2007, Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to raise awareness about climate change.

The University of California San Diego has announced that climate advocate and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore will serve as its 2024 All-Campus Commencement speaker.
