Abstract: This paper examines the little-known and long forgotten overseas deployment of Japanese minesweepers to North Korea in 1950. The involvement of Japanese forces in the Korean War is often overshadowed by the actions of major players such as the United Nations, the Soviet Union, and China. However, the role of Japanese minesweepers in clearing mines from North Korean waters played a crucial part in the conflict.
For an event that came so close to triggering a third world war, the 1950-1953 conflict in Korea receives relatively little attention. The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when North Korean forces invaded South Korea. The United Nations quickly pledged to aid North Korea, leading to a tumultuous series of events that would shape the course of the war.
As South Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel and advanced into North Korea, the Soviet Union intervened and swiftly captured South Korea within days. The North Korean army took control of the South Korean capital of Seoul, setting the stage for a fierce and prolonged conflict.
