The arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in South Vietnam during July and August 1962 was the beginning of a long and tumultuous involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War. For almost thirty years, by means financial, military, and diplomatic, the United States tried to prevent Vietnam from becoming a Communist stronghold.

As the war dragged on, the toll on both American and Vietnamese lives continued to rise, leading to widespread protests and unrest back in the United States.
