A look back at President Woodrow Wilson's leadership during WWI.

who was the president of the united states during world war i?

Woodrow Wilson, a leader of the Progressive Movement, was the 28th President of the United States (1913-1921). After a policy of neutrality at the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Wilson eventually led the country into the war in 1917. He believed that the United States had a moral responsibility to make the world "safe for democracy."

Wilson's presidency during World War I was marked by his efforts to maintain peace while also preparing the country for war. He signed the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918, which limited free speech to prevent dissent against the war effort. Wilson also created the Committee on Public Information to promote pro-war propaganda.

Even before the United States entered World War II in December 1941, America was sending arms and equipment to the Soviet Union to help it fight against Nazi Germany. This was a continuation of Wilson's policy of supporting allies in times of conflict.

Wilson's leadership during World War I also included the negotiation of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended the war and established the League of Nations. Despite his efforts to promote peace and prevent future conflicts, the U.S. Senate ultimately rejected the treaty and the country did not join the League of Nations.

Woodrow Wilson's presidency was marked by both domestic and international challenges. He introduced progressive reforms such as the Federal Reserve Act, the Federal Trade Commission Act, and the Clayton Antitrust Act. These laws aimed to regulate big business and protect workers' rights.

In 1944, 982 Jewish refugees arrived from parts of Southern and Eastern Europe to Fort Ontario in Oswego, NY. These were the only refugees allowed into the United States during World War II due to strict immigration policies. Wilson's policies during his presidency set the stage for the restrictive immigration laws of the 1920s.

Wilson's presidency had a lasting impact on American politics and foreign policy. His vision for a world order based on diplomacy and collective security influenced future generations of leaders. Despite facing criticism for his handling of race relations and civil liberties, Wilson's legacy as a wartime president remains significant.
