President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. today announced a new executive action with the goal of increasing the number of background checks for gun purchases. The president signed the executive action at a press conference in Monterey Park, California.
The executive action is aimed at closing loopholes in the current background check system for gun purchases. It also seeks to expand the use of background checks at gun shows and other locations. The president noted that the executive action will help to prevent future mass shootings.
“The reality is that nothing in the president's executive order today would have done anything to prevent the recent mass shootings in Boulder and Atlanta,” said the president. “But we have to do something to make sure that we’re doing everything we can to make sure these tragedies don’t happen again.”
The president also noted that the executive action is aimed at preventing gun violence, which he said is a “public health crisis.” He said that the executive action will help to make sure that those who are not legally allowed to purchase firearms are not able to do so.
The president also noted that the executive action is a part of a broader effort to reduce gun violence. The executive action is also part of the president’s “It’s just common sense” initiative, which seeks to reduce gun violence through a combination of common sense gun laws and other measures.
The president noted that the executive action is an important step in the right direction, but he also acknowledged that there is still much work to be done. He called on Congress to pass comprehensive gun safety legislation that would help to reduce gun violence in the United States.
