On this day in 1755 or 1757, Alexander Hamilton was born in the Caribbean. He would go on to become one of the most influential figures in American history. Hamilton was a Founding Father, a key figure in the creation of the United States Constitution, and the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. His ideas and policies helped shape the economic foundation of the young nation.

Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, is somewhat of a pop culture phenomenon thanks to a hit musical about his life. "Hamilton" premiered on Broadway in 2015 and quickly became a cultural sensation. The musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, tells the story of Hamilton's rise from humble beginnings to his pivotal role in shaping the future of the United States.

Hamilton's whole argument, and the purpose of Federalist No. 70, is that the president should be accountable. Hamilton believed in a strong executive branch that could effectively govern the country while also being held accountable to the people. His ideas on government and finance laid the groundwork for the modern American political system.

Since it was founded 240 years ago by Alexander Hamilton, a U.S. founding father further immortalized in a Broadway musical, BNY has grown into one of the largest financial institutions in the world. Hamilton's vision for a strong central bank and a sound financial system has had a lasting impact on the global economy.

On July 11, 1804, U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr killed longtime political foe Alexander Hamilton, the first treasury secretary, in a duel. The duel between Burr and Hamilton was the culmination of years of political rivalry and personal animosity. Hamilton's death was a tragic loss for the young nation, but his legacy lived on in the policies and institutions he helped create.
