WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate passed a $1.2 trillion package of spending bills in the early morning hours Saturday, a long overdue action that will fund more than half of the government. The bill, which includes funding for defense, foreign aid, and domestic programs, had faced numerous delays and obstacles in recent months.

A sweeping foreign aid package easily passed the Congress after months of delay, clearing the way for billions of dollars in fresh Ukraine. The funding will also provide assistance to Israel and Taiwan, bolstering America's commitments to its allies.

Lawmakers sped a possible TikTok ban through Congress by tying it to a sprawling funding package offering aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. The move reflects growing concerns about national security and the influence of foreign-owned apps on American users.

After hours of delay, the Senate overwhelmingly voted for the $1.2 trillion bill to fund more than half of the government, sending the legislation to the president's desk for his signature. The bill includes a pay raise for service members and funding for critical defense programs.

The Senate voted 75-22 on March 8 to pass and send to the president for his signature a package of six appropriations bills funding certain government agencies. The legislation will provide funding for various programs and initiatives for the coming fiscal year.

Congress approved a short-term funding measure to allow lawmakers more time to finish work on long-term spending bills. The measure will keep the government funded temporarily while negotiations continue on the larger spending package.

The massive funding bill divided Republicans and showcased shifting attitudes about America's role in global affairs. Some lawmakers expressed concerns about the level of foreign aid included in the package, while others praised the bill for supporting America's allies and promoting stability around the world.

After a year of haggling and four stopgap measures, Congress passed the last bill to fund the government through the fiscal year. The bill represents a bipartisan effort to keep the government running and provide critical funding for key programs and services.
