An explosive exchange between Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Texas, and independent journalist Matt Taibbi occurred on Thursday during a House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government hearing concerning internal Twitter documents. Rep. Sylvia Garcia was accused of badgering Taibbi into revealing a source, and Taibbi fired back after the congresswoman called him and others "so-called journalists".
The hearing was held to examine internal Twitter documents obtained by the journalist, which revealed the company's decision-making process when responding to government requests to review posts. In the second hearing of its kind, Democrats and Republicans sparred over how Twitter handles government requests.
Rep. Sylvia Garcia asked Matt Taibbi about when Musk first approached him, but the journalist refused to answer because it would reveal his source. In response, Garcia said “I am not asking you to reveal your sources. I am asking you to tell me what the conversation was.” Taibbi replied “I can’t do that.”
